Simmental and Simbrasil at Finca Queverí

Productivity, hardiness and cattle selection for the conditions of Orosi, Costa Rica.

Back to The farmCATTLE IN OROSI, CARTAGO

At Finca Queverí we work with Simmental cattle, commercial Simmental and a crossbreeding program with Nelore to reach Simbrasil. We aim to combine productive traits with functional animals adapted to our farm’s conditions.

Our lines of work

Simmental

Simmental

Of European origin, Simmental is known for its potential for beef and milk production, growth, maternal ability and docility. Performance always depends on genetics, feeding, health and management.

Commercial Simmental

Commercial Simmental

Cattle with Simmental influence, selected for production goals and local adaptation. It is not a separate breed, and the animals are not necessarily purebred or registered: we value functionality, fertility, maternal ability, temperament and grazing performance.

Simbrasil: Simmental × Nelore

Simbrasil: Simmental × Nelore

Simbrasil combines the productive traits of Simmental with the hardiness and tropical adaptation of the zebu component, which in our program is Nelore.

Our program is still being developed: the current animals are not yet a stabilized or registered population.

F2 — Second crossWe are here

To reach Simbrasil, we are currently at the F2 cross: we cross the ½ Simmental females back with Nelore, which gives ¼ Simmental animals.

The stages describe our program’s progress. The genetic composition of each cross depends on the animals used.

On this page, F1 and F2 name the first and second crosses of Queverí’s program, with the compositions shown in the diagram. F2 does not mean we already have Simbrasil.

Selecting for our farm’s conditions

We aim to combine productivity and hardiness by selecting functional animals in tropical conditions. These are our selection goals and the potential advantages we work toward:

  • RobustnessFunctional structure, maternal ability, fertility and grazing performance.
  • HeatThe Nelore component can contribute traits that favor tropical adaptation.
  • HumidityWe evaluate legs, hooves, skin, health and performance under local conditions.
  • Climate variabilitySelection and management for changes in temperature, rainfall and forage availability.
  • Supporting managementShade, water, nutrition, drainage, pasture management and preventive health care.

These are goals and potential advantages; results depend on each animal and its management.
